Written by AMA staff (04/1986); Formatted by JS (01/2009)

Christopher Bovais, Gresham, Oregon, was awarded $1,500, to help him at the University of Washington in Seattle. He will be working towards a degree in aeronautical engineering. His final GPA at Gresham Union High School was 3.8.

Chris was a member of the National Honor Society and the Spanish National Honor Society. A keen swimmer, he captained the swim team and played water polo, winning letters for both activities. He also enjoys math and chess.

He is very proud of his certification as a student pilot for full-scale sailplanes. In model aviation, Chris has been a keen competitor, winning many trophies for indoor flying. Hand Launched Gliders, A-01, EZB, Pennyplane, and Coupe (Outdoor FF) are areas of interest for him. He decided at age eight that aeronautical engineering was to be his field, and has worked towards that goal ever since.

At the 1983, Nats held at Westover Air Force Base, he placed first in Modified Standard Radio Control Sailplanes, and was the best Senior in Sport Scale Sailplanes. At the 1984 Reno Nats, Chris was again the best Senior in Sport Scale Sailplanes. Perhaps his proudest achievement to date is the new National Record he set in Pennyplane for Category IV.
