Dorothy Fields

Transcribed and edited by JS (11/2007)

In 1948, Dorothy married Burnis Fields and thus started her and Burnie on their road to aviation happiness – both model and full-size aviation. That first year, Burnie taught Dorothy how to build and fly Free Flight, then advanced to Control Line models. Finally, after many years, she learned to build and fly Radio Control models.

She and Burnie also restored a Piper J-3 Cub, which flies perfectly. Together, they flew models in competition throughout the United States with Dorothy acting as Pit Crew and Caller. The AMA has always been an important part of the model airplane hobby for her. After Burnie died, she took over his job of Frequency Coordinator for District V for many years. Dorothy helped operate Field’s Hobby Shop in Jacksonville, Florida for 21 years. In addition, she is a charter member of the Gateway Radio Control Club in Jacksonville, and a life member of the Palatka Sun Flyers Club in Palatka, Florida.

She is constantly encouraging young people to get involved in model aviation by teaching them to build models. At 71, she is still very active in our hobby.
