I started building airplanes at age nine at YMCA camp. These were “wind-up models,” as we used to call them. Glue was a nickel and a Comet kit cost 10 cents.

During the early part of World War II, I carved identification models for the services. I could not build airplanes during the war, but my family sent me the model airplane magazines and I never lost interest.

From 1946 to 1950, I attended Duke University and had limited time for model building. I flew U-Control and various categories of Free Flight. Even though I do not fly Free Flight any more, it is still my first love. Today it is Radio Control Electric. I still compete in several events in electric, but lack of practice has reduced my skill considerably. I still love it and enjoy the friendships I have because of my involvement in model airplanes. Because of my present involvement with the AMA and the museum activities, I look forward to being apart of a new museum building and indoor flying site.

Not only do we plan to preserve the past and have a great display of what has been, but also there is now a lot of work being done to show and teach young people model aviation. The museum and indoor flying site will have classrooms, a theater, day camp capabilities, and various handson opportunities for involvement in model airplane design, construction, and flying. I hope we can accomplish this by the end of 2006. (signed) Doug Holland

Doug Holland Retires

After many years of service to AMA, our longtime chief financial officer (CFO), Doug Holland, has decided to step down. Doug oversaw the Academy’s financial position, advised our accounting staff and the Executive Council (EC), and directed our investment advisors.

From page 2

Doug is the architect of AMA’s current solid financial position. Doug became a respected friend and I will miss his intellect, broad smile, and friendly ways. We are a much better organization today because of his service. Thank you, Mr. Holland!
