Evan Weaver of Hockessin, Delaware was awarded a $3,000 AMA/Charles Hampson Grant Scholarship.
Valedictorian of his class at Wilmington Christian School and a National Merit Scholar, Evan scored a perfect 1600 on his SAT test. Evan is participating in a study-abroad program prior to attending the University of Delaware (Honors) to study philosophy, computer science, and jazz. An AMA member since 1998, Evan is a member of the Silent Knights Soaring Society in Delaware. Prior modeling experience with electric trains and model rockets helped with building his first aircraft, a Great Planes Spirit with a Hitec Flash 5 radio.
Evan served as captain of his high school Mock Trial team, which won the state championship two years in a row. He also participated and received state-level prizes in visual arts, music, Math League, History Day, and the Academic Bowl competition.
Evan is the only student participant in the Chesapeake Silver Cornet Brass Band, playing trumpet in a 45-piece volunteer band that gives free concerts in a four-state area. Evan plays piano and bass guitar as well and participates in his church’s brass ensemble, playing for holiday celebrations.
In addition, Evan designed and maintains his church’s Web site.
Involved in the art program at his school, Evan has won awards in computer graphics and photography in the Delaware Scholastic Arts Competition, as well as performing a piano solo at the same competition.
He worked in a biomechanical engineering lab at the University of Delaware doing computer programming and computer graphics. The lab is creating software that takes the electric impulses one’s muscles send out and simulates the motion of a three-dimensional arm on the computer screen in order to help create more responsive artificial limbs.
One of Evan’s programs was published on the Web site of Musclographics, Inc., which produces related commercial products.
Best of luck from AMA, Evan, in the pursuit of your education.
