Glenn A. Dean, a native of Moreno Valley, California, is a freshman at the Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne, Florida, studying aerospace engineering. He was awarded $6,000 by the Committee and $1,000 from the Toledo Weak Signal Scholarship fund.
An AMA member since 1985, he is a member of the Riverside RC Club and the Miniature Aircraft RC Society of San Bernardino. Flying Radio Control power primarily, he competes in numerous Pattern events each year. Glenn also enjoys judging Pattern and Scale competitions, having attained a Level Three in the Unified Scale and Pattern Judges Association. Additionally, he has built several sailplanes and is a member of the League of Silent Flight. In fact, Radio Control Soaring put Glenn on his career path.
For the 1988 Moreno Valley Unified School District Science Fair, Glenn built a Radio Control sailplane and researched the effect of spoilers on its glide path. The project took first place and ignited his interest in doing further research in aerodynamics.
Graduating fourth in his high school class with a perfect 4.0 GPA, Glenn was named to the National Honor Society (1987-1989), the High Honor Roll (1985-1989), the California Scholastic Federation (1987-1989), and Who’s Who in American High School Students (19881989). Additionally, he won a four-year Army ROTC scholarship, was recognized as the U.S. Achievement Academy National Leadership Merit Award Winner (1988), and was a National Merit Semifinalist (1988). He was also a member of the Math Club, the College Bowl Team, and the track and cross-country teams.
Also interested in music, Glenn was a member of the All-City Band and played in his high school marching, jazz, and symphonic bands, winning the Band Director’s Leadership Award in 1988. He enjoys cycling and is a member of the Knickerbuckers of San Diego County, a bicycletouring club.
