Kevin A. Freeman

Kevin A. Freeman of Hickman, Kentucky, received $4,500 from the Grant Scholarship fund. In his first year at the University of Illinois at Carbondale, he is enrolled in the honors program and studying computer science.

Kevin has been involved in Radio Control flying for three years. He began with trainers, such as the Craft-Air Piece-O-Cake, before advancing to the Agujon V he recently scratch-built. He enjoys demonstrating the sport to others and has flown exhibitions at the Goodyear employee’s picnic and for the local AMA club, the Reelfoot Aeromodelers.

Kevin graduated from Fulton County High School in Hickman, Kentucky as salutatorian of his class with a 3.975 GPA in May 1989. He was the recipient of numerous awards including being named to the All-American Scholar Program, the Governor’s Scholar Program, and Who’s Who in American High School Students. Active in academic contests, he placed second in the state at the Future Business Leaders of America’s Computer Concepts competition and participated in several Governors’ Cup competitions, placing second in the 1988 math series and seventh in the 1989 science segment. Additionally, he was treasurer of the Beta Club and a member of the Math Club, Academic Team, varsity basketball team, and the band.

His community involvement includes assisting the local Girl Scout troop in cleaning and renovating the local park. He also is involved in 4-H, attending leadership conferences in the United Kingdom and North Carolina.

In addition to model aviation, Kevin’s other hobbies include computer programming and photography. Some of his photographs have earned blue ribbons at the Kentucky State Fair. He also has worked as a photographer and sports reporter for the Fulton Daily Leader.
