Maurice Roddy

Maurice Roddy, aviation editor of the Chicago Daily Times and Sun, as well as one of the model aviation’s most ardent supporters, died in his Chicago home on September 23. He was taken seriously ill during the Nationals at Olathe while covering the meet for his paper. Although in great pain, Maurice stayed on the job until he collapsed and was sent to a Chicago hospital, protesting loudly. Subsequent reports indicated that after being hospitalized for several weeks, he was on the road to recovery and had returned to his home. After making excellent progress, he suffered a relapse early in September.

The death of Maurice Roddy is a profound loss to model aviation. From the early days of organized model flying, he vigorously supported the activity and for years conducted one of the few syndicated model aviation columns in the country. Through the Chicago Times, Maurice participated in the sponsorship of National Championship meets in Chicago and was a familiar and welcome figure at all others.

Maurice was loved and respected by all who knew him and it has been truthfully said that he earned the friendship of more people in the model and full-scale aviation fields than any other member of the press.

His contributions to the advancement of model aviation in this country have been many and the benefits of his work will continue to accrue for many years to come.
