Modeling Resume Richard R. Plum December 20, 2002

I constructed balsa and tissue models as a teenager. Control Line modeling began in 1959 with my son, Richard Jr. I was one of the founders of the Springfield Model Airplane Club, located in Springfield (Delaware County), Pennsylvania. We flew Control Line aircraft in various meets and demonstrations around the area. At demonstrations, I flew a model of Bob Palmer’s Thunderbird.

Following a move to New Jersey in 1962, I was one of the founders of the Bell Telephone Laboratories (Holmdel Lab) Radio Control Club, circa 1964-1965. I joined the AMA at that time. We had our own model airport on company grounds. I served as club librarian and routed copies of the club’s magazines to members via company mail. We had subscriptions to about five modeling magazines, including one British publication. I personally bound each year’s issues. When the Bell System was disbanded, the club went out of existence. On my own, I shipped the entire club library of over 500 magazines to the AMA librarian in Muncie.

Upon my move to Kingsport, Tennessee, I joined the Johnson City Radio Controllers (JCRC) in 1996 and rejoined the AMA. I served as newsletter editor in 1999. During my tenure as newsletter editor, I donated over 37 aviation videos to the club’s video library. I am still an active member.
