Steven M. Gigl is from Green Bay, Wisconsin. He graduated from Southwest High School with a GPA of 3.913 and was eighth in a class of 357. His SAT scores were 700 for verbal and 690 for math.

Steven’s AMA/Charles Hampson Grant Scholarship award was $4,000, which will assist with tuition in the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. He plans a major in engineering. Steven was a member of the National Honor Society for three years and was treasurer for the group in 1993-1994. He won letters for academics in 1992 and for the band in 1993. Extracurricular activities by Steven while in high school frequently involved playing music, the bass guitar and trombone, as either a soloist or member of an ensemble, band, or orchestra. He helped achieve a number of awards, including the bronze band award and silver jazz band award at the 1993 Peachtree Music Festival in Atlanta, Georgia.

He was the features editor of the school newspaper in his junior year and co-editor-in-chief in his senior year. To name a few of his activities, he worked on the school radio station, was a member of the German Club, was a member of the Forensics Club, was on the school Science Academic Team, was on the yearbook staff, and won awards in writing competitions. He earned a bit of spending money by working part-time for Hardee's of DePere, Wisconsin. In addition to enjoying modeling, Steven likes reading, writing short prose and news, listening to music, playing the bass guitar and trombone, computer gaming, computer graphics, and drawing cartoons.

He was a Red Cross Blood Drive volunteer in several capacities for three years. He worked with the Salvation Army Coats for Kids program in 1993, and in the previous year he helped with this group’s Toys for Tots program and the Adopt-A-Family program.

For the last three years, Steven has been learning to fly Radio Control with a scratch-built Blue Max, then with a Goldberg Eagle II. He has been in the early stages of building a Balsa USA Easy 100 for many months, what with school, other activities, and part-time work at Hardee’s occupying most of his time. Other models he has built and flown include two rubber-powered Free Flight models (Piper Cub look-alike and P-51 Mustang) and an Ace RC 1/2A Whizard.
