Brent Waganer, Florissant, Missouri, is pursuing a medical education at the University of Missouri in Kansas City. His award, in the amount of $2,500, will help him in the first year of a six-year course of study. Brent graduated from McCluer North High School with a GPA of 3.875, placing 13th in a class of 420. He had many interests in high school, serving on the Student Council every year-as Secretary his junior year and President in his senior year. He was named to the National Honor Society in his sophomore, junior and senior years. He won the Bausch & Lomb Science Award.
As a Boy Scout, Brent earned Eagle Scout status with four palms, and he served as assistant scoutmaster with his troop. Other school activities included track, wrestling, and cross-country running – as a member of the junior varsity and later the varsity squad. In the community, he worked for the Students Against Drunk Driving campaign, was a volunteer at Christian Hospital, directed annual blood bank drives, and taught swimming and lifesaving courses. To earn funds for university enrollment, he managed a valet parking service.
As an aeromodeler, he enjoyed flying Control Line aircraft. He has been a member of the McDonnell Douglas Radio Control Club for four years. Presently, Brent is building a Sig Kougar, but he is looking forward to working on a Twin Mustang (F-82) in which he will install an electronic speed control system that he built himself. An interesting project is a Science Fair effort to study and attempt to reduce the noise created by model aircraft engines. The following was published in the January 1988 issue of Model Aviation magazine. Brent was a 1987 Sig Memorial Scholarship winner.
Brent Waganer attended high school in Florissant, Missouri. He is now taking a pre-med course at the University of Missouri, Kansas City. Active in student affairs, athletics, Scouting, and model aviation, Brent received many honors in his high school years.
His model aviation activity includes Control Line and Radio Control. He recently produced his own design for a speed control system that will be used in an F-82 Twin Mustang. He has combined model aviation and Scouting by using his hobby knowledge to prepare presentations to assist Scouts with their merit badge in aviation.
Brent has worked part-time for several years to help finance his college education.
