Hugh W. Wagner

Written by AMA staff (03/1988; Transcribed by JS (05/2008)

Hugh W. Wagner joined the AMA in 1938 at age 14. He has been an aeromodeler, off and on, ever since. He interrupted his model aircraft career to serve as a fighter pilot in WWII and then again to fight in Korea in 1952. Douglas Aircraft employed him until he took disability retirement in 1975. He has helped to organize clubs, served as a club officer, Contest Director, newsletter editor, and safety officer, and is an AMA Leader Member.

Hugh obtained a flying site for his club, formulated the field rules, and wrote the club constitution. He holds a full-scale glider pilot’s license, and is in demand as a lecturer on Soaring, aerodynamics, and meteorology.

Despite physical handicaps, he is a master modeler and has not missed one meeting since he cofounded his club. He provides a winch to the Soaring pilots, instruction to newcomers, and a frequency control system for field control. Trophies, awards, ceremonies, and contest notices – all fall within the normal range of chores that Hugh routinely looks after. Truly a club asset of tremendous importance, he typifies the kind of person that Carl and Beth Goldberg had in mind when they created their special fund.
