Model Club 1927- Brewer Trophy 1968
Model airplanes do lead to bigger things. Take the case of Dr. Roland H. Spaulding. In 1927, he organized one of the very early model airplane clubs in a junior high school in New Rochelle, NY. Then, during 1928 through 1931, he participated in aviation projects sponsored by the Daniel Guggenheim Fund Committee on Elementary and Secondary Aeronautics Education. In the intervening time, he has been constantly associated with aerospace education, and to this day, although academically retired, he is active as an educator consultant to Pan American World Airways.
In recognition of his continuous, outstanding, and pioneering contributions to aerospace education of the nation’s youth, Dr. Spaulding was awarded the Frank G. Brewer Trophy for 1967. The trophy, administered by the National Aeronautic Association, was presented at the annual banquet of the National Aerospace Education Council in Denver last April. We can all be proud whenever model airplanes provide a stepping-stone to a career – which was the case here.
