Written by AMA staff (04/1993); Transcribed by JS (05/2008)

John Black from Brandon, Minnesota, graduated from Brandon Public School with a GPA of 3.86 and now attends Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. A $2,000 Grand Scholarship was sent to the University on his behalf.

John will pursue a major degree in electrical engineering and a minor in music performance. In high school, he was deeply interested in music, performing in the concert orchestra, the marching band, and the jazz ensemble. His skills earned him an appointment to the Minnesota All-State Band as a section leader.

Academically, John was an excellent, talented student, and became involved with the Odyssey of the Mind program, winning at the local, district, regional, and state levels. He took advantage of the University of Minnesota Talented Youth Mathematics program with great success in geometry, algebra, and calculus.

John’s school activities included drama, music, photography, and airbrushing, but he found time for athletics, too, winning his letter in wrestling. Letters in drama and band, the 3-M Richard Drew Award, and four years on the honor roll were added to his list of achievements. John spent 11 active years in 4-H, serving as junior leader and chapter president. Through 4-H, he entered a model at the annual state fair and won a Grand Champion Award. He is also a member of the Youth Board in his church.

He belongs to model aircraft and car clubs. He owns three well-flown airplanes, is building one new one, and renovating still another. He enjoys his Gee Bee Sportster, having soloed three years ago. He also works hard with fellow members when the club holds public events, such as mall shows. As a club officer, he served as secretary for his car club, but is also a keen competitor with his RC-10 vehicle.
