Written by AMA staff (04/1993); Transcribed by JS (05/2008)

Robert A. Bittner of Appleton, Wisconsin, attends the University of Wisconsin-Madison, planning a career in aeronautical-electrical engineering. Robert received $3,700 from the Grant Fund, plus an additional $1,000 from the Toledo Weak Signals Fund.

During his four years at Hortonville High School, he was a member of the student council, winner of the Top Chemist Award, debate team captain, editor of the student-run science journal, and was involved with the Olympics of the Mind program.

He enjoys audio design/construction, physics, and computer assisted design (CAD), which he plans to use during his college years.

Planning for college funds, Robert held a part-time job as a busboy at a supper club, joined Target stores in its customer assistance department, and worked as a stockperson. His eight-year affiliation with 4-H introduced him to community service, allowing him to work with older people, host recreational events for children, as well as become directly involved in agricultural matters. Active in his church, he again contributed to his community through church projects.

His aeromodeling activities include rocketry, Free Flight, and Radio Control. He particularly enjoys scale aircraft, and likes designing as well as making analyses of small-model flight characteristics. His demonstrations of Radio Control aircraft ground handling and talks on the basics of Radio Control have been well received at 4-H meetings and the Wisconsin State Fair.
